Compound Words Snowman Freebie

Do you incorporate inquiry activities with your lesson plans? If you have some stuffed animals like the ones in the picture, you could use them for an inquiry lesson. This is an activity for students with prior knowledge of compound words. Set the stuffed animals on a small table where you will teach the lesson later in the day. Stuffed animals are a kid magnet. Your students will notice the stuffed animals as soon as they walk in the classroom. If you save this lesson until the afternoon, your students will begin the inquiry process on their own.

Not quite sure where the inspiration came from, but mostly likely the frigid temperatures that were awaiting us in Chicago. This is my first try at a compound word activity so I hope you all like it. If desired print the polka-dot page on the back of the mitten pages. It makes it look nice and also makes it so you cannot see through the cards. Once printing is done, cut the cards apart. You will need one copy per player. You can also laminate the sheets or put them in a clear pocket so it can be used over and over. Once the cards are prepared and the worksheet copied, place all the cards face down in rows. Player One begins the game by choosing two cards. If it is not a real word, the word gets recorded in the other column and the cards go back in the game. Player Two repeats the same steps. Play continues until all the cards have been made into compound words, or until no more compound words can be made.
