INTERESTING PLACES


The oldest scientific nature reserve in Moldova is situated near Lozova, 50 km from Chisinau, and is called "Codrii". It was founded on September 27, 1971. Scientific nature reserves are highly protected and divided into 3 functional zones: a strictly protected zone, a buffer zone, and an intermediate zone. One is impressed by nature’s plentiful forms and species, some of which are close to extinction. In the "Codrii" reserve almost 1000 species of plants are protected, that is half of the flora specific to Moldova: 43 species of mammals: 145 species of birds: 7 species of reptiles: 10 species of fish, and more than 8 thousand species of insects.The main forest trees here consist of tall oaks and beeches. Within the reserve boundaries there is an area of meadow and a rich "Natural Museum".

The biggest park in Moldova is situated in the middle of Taul village (about 200 km north the Chisinau). The park surrounded the stylish manor house of the Pommers family at the beginning of the XXth c. It represents one of the most successful works of the landscape architect I.Vladislavschi-Padalco, highly appreciated by the elite of those times. The Park was designed in a specific manner, thus the main compositions consist of successive levels along the paths, which lead peacefully down to a picturesque valley with a small lake. The tree-collection comprises almost 150 species of trees, shrubs and climbers of almost 100 exotic types. Formally the Park was divided into two: The upper level with the country seat of the Pommers and a dense network paths overflowing with diverse flower compositions, and the lower level, which reminiscent of a large forest with groups of trees characteristic to different geographical zones. Being the biggest park in Moldova it has an impressive network of 12.5 km of paths and trails. Admission to the Park is free.

In the middle of the XVIIth c., for geo-strategic reasons, Orhei town was moved 18 km north to the Raut gorge at Vasile Lupu on the orders of the Ruler of Moldova. This helped to preserve the vestiges of the old civilization in a real open air museum complex. Here tourists can also visit "The Peasant Yard" museum (XIXc.), "Trebujeni" landscape nature reserve, and other sights.

The Old Orhei museum complex is open daily from 0900 to 1800, except Mondays.Local guides and entrance fees.
